^^I'M SORRY SHANNEN.^^

Amara. Canada. Queer. Awesome.

History, book, film, and television addict. Embroiderer extraordinaire and future librarian. The most anxious and mentally semi-stable person you will ever know. I like tea, having a romanticised view of Britain, and flailing.

I also like a lot of other things

Amara's big damn list of things she reads and watches in 2012

Tom Hiddleston is a horrible person who I greatly dislike.

spockity replied to your post: I don’t think I can fully express the infuriating…

Preach. My mom’s best friend is German and was in her pre-teens early-teens when Hitler was in power. The disgust in her voice when she talks about him, over 60 years later, and the stories she tells me are so chilling.

I just don’t fucking understand how you could deny any even of genocide. Even those who don’t outright deny it, but say that things “weren’t as bad as people claim it was”. Fuck you. People were banned from doing things such as owning businesses and going to fucking school, made to wear logos on their clothing denoting their status, forcibly removed from their homes and taken off to camps where they were either immediately murdered, or forced to do hard labour and then get murdered. That is putting it incredibly simply. Yes, I only have second-hand knowledge about atrocities like the Holocaust and the Holodomor, but it hurts me to the core of my very soul when people don’t have a fucking clue about what life was like. I don’t even fully know what life was like, so I’m not sure how much I’m actually allowed to say on these subject, but jesus tapdancing christ people were fucking tortured and murdered, and it was all fucking legal!

It disgusts me to think that there are people out there who are capable of feeling such hate that they are able to plan the systematic oppression and genocide of millions of people, and actually be able to rally public support for it. Of course there were Germans at the time who hated Hitler and what he was doing to their country, but to speak out on such a matter would get you the same harsh treatment.

How anyone has the fucking gall to deny the Armenian genocide, the oppression of the world’s aboriginal people, and what the Khmer Rouge did in Cambodia is fucking scum and a waste of space and resources.

These things are not excuses for people to play the victim card or expect certain privileges. They do not mean that we must always be gentle when speaking about the groups of people they once harmed or continue to harm. These events of genocide are used as lessons in history and show future generations the kinds of suffering and domination that can happen in the world. They are a lesson in culture, racism, and prejudice. They are not meant to be something that we blame others for or something that we always hyper focus on.

They are our history and unfortunately our future. They are our broken ancestors and our erased cultures. They are horrific and soul crushing. They should never, ever, be forgotten.
